The fifth and final edition of Beyond Eden will once again be hosted by the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park this coming October. Beyond Eden is a multi-gallery event celebrating the New Contemporary art movement in Los Angeles put together by Andrew Hosner (co-owner / curator at Thinkspace) and made possible by the City Of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. The public is invited to attend this special event and admission will be $5 and open to all.

Each successive Beyond Eden event grows larger and larger with combined average attendance well over 5,000 people for the past four years of the event. The New Contemporary Art Movement continues to build momentum on a national level and is finally starting to receive mainstream recognition from major institutions and publications the world over. With its foundation firmly planted in Southern California and a patron base here in Los Angeles that has been building over the past several decades, it’s easy to see why Beyond Eden has been welcomed with such open arms by the Los Angeles arts community and has become an anticipated annual event.

It will be sad to see it go but due to rising costs associated with the City, we can simply no longer afford to put this on and have it live up to the standards of our past events. We plan to make this final event one for the history books and one you won’t soon forget!

Beyond Eden 2015 will showcase the works of five of California’s finest New Contemporary art galleries and will be held during the weekend of October 3rd and 4th with an opening night celebration planned for Saturday, October 3rd from 6-11PM.

Participating galleries include C.A.V.E. Gallery (Venice, CA), Copro Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), Spoke Art (San Francisco, CA), Hashimoto Contempoary (San Francisco, CA) and event organizers Thinkspace (Culver City, CA)

Beyond Eden 2015 will also feature a special solo showcase from Thinkspace represented artist Meggs. ‘Paving Paradise’ will feature an array of new works from the Australian artist along with a large-scale painting / mural for all to enjoy.

Spoke Art is bringing Chuck Sperry’s solo showcase “Muses LA” – a new collection of Sperry’s contemporary-classical muses inspired by the spirit of modern rock poster art, graffiti art, the spirit of 1960’s psychedelia, and in broader terms, inspired by the perennial theme of Orphic Dionysian mysteries.

PangeaSeed and artist Chuck Sperry are pleased to announce the eleventh official print release of our 2015 print suite “Tales from the Deep: Stories, Myths & Monsters” – a fine art print suite to help save our seas. This limited edition will be released Thursday, November 12 at 12pm PST via shop.PangeaSeed.org – limit one print per household.
_______________
My print for Pangea Seed, “Siren”, is meant as warning. My imagination has always been drawn to this mythical being – dangerous and enchanting – whose form is an enthralling warning. The Siren dances and sings like the sea itself, seducing us with her sound, movement and beauty.

Long ago, on November 5, 1965, prominent climate scientists Roger Revelle, Wallace Broecker, Charles Keeling, Harmon Craig, and J Smagorisnky met with US President Lyndon Johnson and warned him of their findings on Climate Change. By 1974, Wallace Broekner had modeled his prediction for the affects of accumulated carbon dioxide on the global surface temperature of the Earth. His predictions remain accurate to this day.

As of 2015 we have experienced a 1 degree centigrade rise in temperature worldwide, as Broekner predicted.

In the last few seasons we have witnessed the California Drought, a record fire season, and the Pacific Blob (a 2-7 degree rise in Pacific Coastal water temperatures).

I am alarmed by the state of our planet’s environment. I grew up with the warnings. The predicted changes are here now.

It’s clearly time to act. Please be mindful and give your care to the environment. It’s time to do what you can to become a good steward of the environment. I am always happy to contribute my time and energy to Pangea Seed! Their efforts in helping to save the seas deserve our support and good energies!

My poster is inspired by the Norse God Thor, who lords over the earth from high Valhalla, above the Rainbow Bridge at the end of days, Ragnarok.
New Years Eve is a symbolic renewal, a rebirth of creative energy, and a transformation of old patterns into new. With the end comes a new beginning!
I have always been inspired by the mystical and underground comix style of the master poster maker, Rick Griffin. This poster is a tip of my Viking helmet to the king.
I will be making a very limited release of my Artist Edition and Mirror Foil Edition on Thursday (appropriately enough: Thor’s Day), January 7, 2016 at a random time.

_______________

It’s Edwardian Ball time again, and as always, it’s a great pleasure to work with Justin Katz, the Edwardian Ball impresario, and once again I had a lot of fun making this poster!

My Edwardian Ball posters always have an edge of social critique in them. They are done with a wink and a nod, in keeping with the enjoyment of attending such an elaborate period pageant.

Most of the attendees also realize that the Edwardian era was one of unabashed and ostentatious oligarchy, unrivaled economic imperialism and a presumed European superiority complex. It’s all of these things that makes the period so bizarre to us today. I’ve always endeavored to reveal this outrageous and bizarre sense of imperial entitlement in my Edwardian Ball posters, and keep them wild and fun.

This year I’ve depicted Russian mega-oligarchs, Tsar & Tsarina, Nicholas and Alexandra. 100 years ago, they had one good year left before the Communists swept them away. We find them, lounging in state dinner attire, a pair of rare white tigers settled at their feet. The background is Rosslyn Chapel. The Russian says, “Tsar, have a nice trip! See ya next Fall!”

I think you have heard this from every artist tapped to make a Black Sabbath poster for this, their last tour. It’s an indescribable honor, a high point, especially for a veteran of the Rock Poster medium, like me; I’ve made posters (and by made – I mean printed every last one – haha!) for over twenty years, and this poster stands out as one of the greatest honors, truly a dream come true! I have rocked out to “War Pigs” for as long as I can remember. Now I’ve gotten to put my artistic stamp on this song, for a huge show for Black Sabbath at Madison Square Garden in New York City – and it’s a kind of surreal but highly satisfying experience.

_______________

I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for a very long time, ever since I scheduled a Widespread Panic poster to appear between two Black Sabbath shows. Panic is very near and dear to my heart! I’ve been calling this “Sabbath Sandwich” with the meat in the middle. I worked very hard to make this poster shine!

My inspiration was given by the band, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, and I ran with it without referring to the movie or book, but just using the idea as a theme. I created an image that suggests Eve in the Garden of Eden, but also suggests Eurydice who once bitten by the snake is taken away to Hades where Orpheus the Prophet-Musician must play his most beautiful music before the King and Queen of the Underworld to save his one true love. It’s a story about the power of love, the length of love and the strength of music to heal. I’ve been creating floral patterns for many of my prints over the last few years; I wanted to create a floral pattern for the background, but this time, a harmonious non-repeating one, which has the rhythm of nature. It’s always okay if you just want to enjoy it for your own reasons, but that’s my inspiration.

Best goddamned bartender from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine. Or Portland, Oregon, for that matter.”

More about the exhibition:

Exhibiting artists: Bill Fick, Chuck Sperry, Crystal Wagner, Dennis McNett, Greg Gossel, Morning Breath, Ravi Zupa, and Troy Lovegates.

Printing is one of the oldest forms of art. Woodblock printing was the first to develop as early as 220 A.D. in China. From this point, printing evolved into many forms, most memorably by way of the invention of the printing press around 1440 that served as the most efficient way to educate the masses through newspapers and books.

In all this time the medium is still relevant, but more important, artists are finding new ways with which to use old methods. This exhibition showcases a select handful of artists who are reshaping the old ways into new on multiple levels.

This body of work serves as evidence that traditional printing is far from obsolete, but it will continue to be used and expanded by artists looking for new ways to express themselves: in with the new, and out and with the old.

______________

More about the Chuck Sperry:

Born in 1962 in Dayton, Ohio, Chuck Sperry received his education from the University of Missouri, School of Journalism, with a dual major in Art and Journalism.

For over 20 years, the artist has explored his unique signature style of silkscreen technique that blends splendid artistry with impeccable craftsmanship. With perfect precision, Sperry utilizes many color layers, translucent inks, metallic inks mixed from raw powder, in his complex designs.

The pieces Sperry selected for “Out of Print” reflect his ongoing exploration of Classical subjects updated to the 21st Century, with echoes of the Vienna Secession and Belle Époque. Sperry’s art is energized by the political street art and the concert posters he has prolifically created throughout his life. The pieces in this exhibition express the synergy of social concern and popular iconography, graffiti and detourned classical themes, political themes and imagery drawn from the Century-long world tradition of poster-making.

Renee de Cossio, curator, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art:

“Never known for following the consensus of any art establishment, Chuck Sperry has a strict loyalty to his craft, and has become a leading innovator of the rock poster art form.  His suspicion and disdain for mainstream American politics often characterizes his approach to making art.   With a sincere dedication to a broad public audience, Sperry reflects a social consciousness and draws much from the immediate urban environment.”

_________________

My successful collaboration with The Who continues with a pair of matching posters commemorating one of the greatest bands on earth as they continue their 50th Anniversary North American Tour. I am deeply honored to present my portrait posters of Who icons Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend.

I felt the designs should reflect a fresh take on a psychedelic attitude which has transformed the world from the neighborhood I call home. I recruited my talented Haight-Ashbury neighbor, famed rock photographer, Michael Zagaris and he offered me iconic photos of The Who to use with his permission for the project. The work of another Haight-Ashbury neighbor, light show genius, Bill Ham, served as an inspiration for the psychedelic light painting backgrounds. I’ve had the great pleasure to work with Michael Zagaris and Bill Ham on numerous projects over the years, and their work and spirit has served as an important source of guidance and inspiration.

I poured my love for The Who into the seven hand-screenprinted colors of both of my limited edition posters. I printed both posters in heavy gold and silver, hand mixed inks. A very subtle lavender pearlescent glaze has been printed over both Roger and Pete which adds a near subliminal luster to the gold metallic, and tingling pearlescent sparkle to the white areas in both figures. I am honored to be working with Pearl Jam, one of my generation’s most creative, pioneering rock groups. For their Miami, South Florida appearance, I created a beautiful mermaid in a old school rock poster tattoo style, holding a “PJ” trident in one hand and a mysterious, glowing “impossible shape,” a forth dimensional triangle, to suggest the mystery of nature in the other hand. I hand screen printed this with hand-mixed gold inks, and translucent color layers, for an effect that glows.

Poster back shows my inspiration from the Pearl Jam song “Force of Nature”:

I’m extremely happy with the result, and couldn’t be more proud to have made these two pieces of art for one of the best rock bands on earth!
